FBI: Southern region is the U.S. crime leader

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCIV) - According to FBI crime statistics for 2011 that were released on Monday, the South has the leading crime rates in the entire country.

The report states the South accounts for 41.3 percent of all violent crimes. The West was next with just 22.9 percent.

Overall, the FBI reports crime numbers continue to fall for the fifth consecutive year.

The crime rate numbers are broken down by property crimes and violent crimes.{} The rate is calculated per 100,000 people.{} The South leads in both property crime and violent crime categories.
