CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Dozens of fortifications from the Revolutionary War and Civil War remain in the Charleston area, and now there will be a complete list of those sites.

The South Carolina Battlefield Preservation Trust this month received a $75,000 American Battlefield Protection Program Grant from the National Park Service allowing researchers to create a database of battle sites in Charleston and Jasper counties.

The project will list of the sites with their GPS coordinates along with a narrative of what happened and what remains.

Doug Bostick of the Battlefield Trust says a cursory look at period maps turned up 220 Civil War sites in Charleston County alone. But he said only about 60 remain and, of those, only 16 are permanently protected.
