Federal transportation officials visit the port

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Federal transportation officials met Wednesday at the Port of Charleston to discuss ways to make it better. {}Included in those talks was Chairman Of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania.Shuster and other lawmakers say a federal trust fund could meet much of the nation's harbor deepening needs if more than half its money weren't used for other projects.{}Studies are currently under way on a proposed $300 million deepening of the Charleston Harbor shipping channel.{}"The return we will get on this investment isn't measurable," Congressman Jim Clyburn said. {}"I think that we have to look at every expenditure and make a determination, is this something that will generate something that will benefit the community."{}The AP Contributed to this report.
