JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The proverbial cups really did run over for the Holiday Festival of Lights. Officials announced Friday that its canned food drive exceeded the 10,000-pound goal by 50 percent.
Festival organizers had hoped to raise 10,000 pounds of canned goods for the Lowcountry Food Bank, but visitors dropped off 15,177 pounds of canned food. Officials say that will make more than 12,000 meals for needy families.
Officials said 2012 set a new record with 8,200 pounds of food collected, so they set a new goal for 2013 to exceed that. They ended up nearly doubling 2012's collection.
The 24th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights ran from Nov. 8 - Dec. 31, 2013. Next year's 25th anniversary festival will kick off on Nov. 14, 2014.
