Fire department alerted of phone scam

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the St. Johns Fire District want those in the community to know that they do not solicit donations over the phone.

They also want you to know they do not accept credit card numbers for donations.

The attempt to raise awareness comes after fire department spokesman, Captain James T. Ghi was alerted that someone in the community was called by someone claiming they were collecting funds for the department's children's burn unit.

In a press release on Monday, Ghi made it clear that any such call is a scam.

"We urge all citizens to use caution during this holiday season when donating to charities," Ghi said. "Only donate if know what charity you are donating, or take the donation to the charity's authorized donation site."

The St. Johns Fire District actively supports the Carolina Children's Charity and the Muscular Dystrophy Association through a sanctioned collection process which is well advertised. The department also supports Toys for Tots by acting as collection station for area citizens.
