Fire destroys $25M plant building near Charleston
WANDO, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - Officials say a weekend fire did about $25 million in damage and destroyed a building at a chemical plant outside of Charleston.According to a release from Cainhoy Rural Fire and Rescue, they responded just before 2 p.m. on Saturday and found heavy smoke and flames.Cainhoy crews immediately called for assistance from Charleston County. The building was evacuated and utilities secured.
The release states that the fire on Saturday gutted a three-story compressor building at the BP Amoco plant in Wando, which is just north of Mount Pleasant.
Crews were at the scene for almost four hours and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings that contained hazardous materials. There were no injuries and there was no immediate word on what caused the blaze.
Cainhoy Fire Department was assisted on scene by the City of Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Department, and BP Fire Brigade.
