      Fire forces apartment building evacuation

      WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Residents of one building at a West Ashley apartment complex were forced to wait outside as firefighters worked to douse flames early Monday morning.

      Officials say firefighters responded to Ashley Oaks Apartments on Ashley Hall Plantation Road just before 12:15 a.m. They extinguished a fire that appeared to be on the 2nd floor. Firefighters say the entire building was evacuated and the fire was under control by 12:45 a.m.

      The Red Cross was notified to help displaced residents. Red Cross officials say they are assisting eleven people whose apartments were heavily damaged by the fire. They Red Cross says eight apartments were affected in all.

      The Charleston Fire Department and St. Andrews Fire Department responded to the fire.

      The City of Charleston Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
