      Firefighters band together to Help the Heartland

      CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Local firefighters are switching shifts and taking donations to drive much needed items to tornado victims in Oklahoma.

      The St. John's Fire District InternationalAssociation of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Local 3883 is collecting supplies and delivering the donations personally.

      The truck, donated by Penske of Summerville, will be loaded up and driven to IAFF Local 176 in Tulsa, Oklahoma by two firefighters from the St. Johns Fire Department.

      Anyone wishing to donate can drop off items at the following locations from May 28 to June 7.

      "The difference between our effort and others in the area is we have a wider area for more citizens to collect and the drop-off is as simple as going to your nearest fire station," said Battalion Chief James T. Ghi. "Additionally, the firefighters from Local 3883 are taking the items to Oklahoma on their own time by swapping shifts so they have the time off.{} There is no cost to the taxpayers and it ensures all area departments can provide proper emergency services without interruption."

      Items needed include:

      • Bottled water
      • Baby formula
      • Personal hygiene items
      • Dog/puppy food
      • Diaper wipes
      • Non-perishable items
      • Clothing (various sizes)
      • Cat/kitten food
      • Diapers (all sizes
      • Household cleaner
      • Canned goods

      Monetary donations are not being accepted and should be made directly to the American Red Cross.
