Fire does 'significant damage' to two Lowcountry businesses

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It took more than two hours for North Charleston firefighters to clear the scene of a fire that left two Lowcountry businesses in tatters early Tuesday morning.

Officials say a building on Ruff Road in North Charleston suffered significant damage due to a fire that sparked just after midnight Tuesday.

A spokesman said the building housed Lowcountry Linen and Paul Cathy Contracting.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the single story warehouse, according to North Charleston Fire Department spokeswoman Bianca Bourbeau.

A large area around the business was blocked off to traffic and pedestrians. The area has since reopened.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

North Charleston and Ashley River fire departments responded.

Officials said Tuesday afternoon the cause remains under investigation because of the extensive damage sustained to the building. Officials said the fire started in Lowcountry Linen.
