      Hundreds of thousands expected for Flowertown Festival

      By Tessa Spencertspencer@abcnews4.com

      SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Upwards of 200,000 people are expected at the 40th annual Flowertown Festival.{}

      According to the Southeast Tourism Industry, the family event is listed among the Top 20 events in the Southeast.

      It's one of several events taking place this weekend in the Lowcountry and Jan Parsons, branch director of the Summerville YMCA enjoys having the annual festival the same time as other big draws.{}

      Speaking specifically on The Cooper River Bridge Run, Parsons said, "after they finish that bridge run we see a lot of those shirts walking around the festival. So... it helps us to have some of the events in the same area."{}

      While it is a free event, proceeds help to keep Summerville YMCA program rates affordable and help families who may not be able to afford to pay for those programs or membership fees.

      The festival began on Friday. It is also open on Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
