Florence County deputy involved in shooting

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - A Florence County sheriff's deputy is on paid administrative leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates the shooting of a suspect following a chase.

Sheriff's Capt. Mike Nunn says the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon when deputies tried to make a traffic stop, and the driver refused to pull over. A chase ensued, and the driver led deputies down a dirt road.

Nunn says the suspects got out of the car and ran, 1 of them pointing a gun at the officers.

Nunn says a deputy shot and wounded 1 of the suspects in self-defense. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, and authorities said they didn't immediately have additional information.

SLED routinely investigates shootings that involve law officers.
