Flu outbreaks cancel visitation at 2 SC prisons
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A flu outbreak has caused authorities to cancel visitation this weekend at two prisons in Columbia.
Corrections Department spokesman Clark Newsom said Saturday that visitation is canceled at Kirkland Correctional Institution and Goodman Correctional Institution.
He says Kirkland has 18 confirmed cases of flu, while Goodman has three confirmed and two suspected cases.
Kirkland is a maximum-security prison for men with a population of almost 1,700. Goodman is a minimum-security prison for women with a population of more than 300.
Newsom says the lockdown means inmates are confined to their cells. He says authorities will re-evaluate the situation Monday.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
