FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) -- County Park officials announced the reopening of Folly Beach County Park for the July 4th weekend, but they say they've already had their first new visitors.
In an update on the renourishment project, Publicity Coordinator Sarah Reynolds said the Folly Beach Turtle Patrol night monitor spotted the park's first sea turtle nest.
"A loggerhead sea turtle nest containing 135 eggs was laid on the edge of the beach slope near the work area," Reynolds said. "Due its proximity to the water's edge, state certified turtle monitors relocated the nest to a better location for hatching, farther down the beach outside the county park area."
The park will open at 9 a.m. July 3 for public visitors, and a grand opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on the beach.
Until then, the beach property remains closed and inaccessible for the public due to continuing construction efforts.
