Folly Beach officer's gun, belt stolen by homeless man

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Folly Beach officer reported her gun and gun belt missing last week after letting a homeless friend with a drug problem stay at her home.

According to a police report, the officer said she let the longtime friend sleep on her couch and get something to eat, but when she woke up last Thursday morning, the man and her .40-caliber handgun and gun belt were gone.

Officials with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said David Ryan Shelton, 25, is wanted on charges of larceny and possession of a stolen pistol in connection with the theft.

The officer said her handcuffs, a bottle of pepper spray and a box of ammunition were also missing.

According to the report, the man's mother called Berkeley County deputies after finding the duty belt in a pile of the man's clothing in Ladson. The report states that everything but the handgun and the ammunition were recovered, however, the once-full can of pepper spray had been almost completely used.
