FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) - The maintenance project toprolong the life of the fishing pier at Folly Beach will continue through thesummer and suspend the Moonlight Mixer events.
According to Charleston County Parks officials, the repairsrequire portions of the 19-year-old pier to be closed off until the project'scompletion. Most of the main walkway of the Folly Beach Fishing Pier willremain open and operational for normal public use, including fishing andwalking.
While the project unfolds, officials say regular operationsand fishing tournaments will continue as scheduled for 2014. However, until theproject is complete, the pier's Moonlight Mixers dance series, which takesplace exclusively on the diamond head of the pier, will be suspended.
The project is an expected, ongoing maintenance effort tokeep the pier in first-class condition for many years.
The first phase of the project, which began this pastwinter, is complete, officials said. That phase included replacing 750 boltsand10 timber cross braces.
This summer, the second phase of the project kicks off and includesassessing, repairing and encapsulating pilings on the 1,045-foot-long pier. Thecurrent expected date of completion on the project is not known at this time, butis estimated for Fall 2014.
The pier is open for normal daily operations as scheduled,from 7 a.m. - sunset in March, 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. in April, and 6 a.m. - 11 p.m.May through September.
