Folly plans special meeting for alcohol ban referendum

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) -- There will be a special meeting Thursday in regards to a referendum that would ban consumption of alcohol on Folly's beach.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m.{}

The referendum, if approved, will be on the ballot for the general election scheduled for Tuesday, November 6, 2012.{}

Wednesday, Folly Beach approved an emergency alcohol ban until officials hope will hold until Labor Day.

The attempt to restirct alcohol use follows several incidents on the July 4th holiday. The beach saw large crowds and beach parties, including crowds that left behind trash and started a riot in which law enforcement officers were injured.

A total of 16 tickets were issued that day after a crowd got out of control and assaulted police officers.
