Former deputy, son arrested in illegal gambling raid
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A month-long investigation into an illegal gambling ring in Berkeley County yielded two arrests on Tuesday.
Former Berkeley County Deputy Chester Grady "Smokey" Howell, 66, and his son Chester Norman Howell, 42, were both arrested and charged with unlawful games and betting, unlawful gaming tables and the unlawful keeping of gaming machines.
Officials said 18 arrest on March 17 led to the location of the operations raided on Tuesday at 1539 Alexander Circle in Summerville and 1260 Lebanon Road in Ridgeville.
The South Carolina Attorney General's Office and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were contacted, and officials said they expect the investigation to continue.
In total, 26 electronic gaming devices were seized as well as over $10,000 in cash.
