Former SC first lady faces fine for dog escape
SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford is getting her day in court for dog escape.
Sanford is scheduled to appear in municipal court on Sullivan's Island on Tuesday. She was fined more than one thousand dollars back in February after her 8-year-old black lab Julius escaped from the yard of her beachfront home.
Sanford concedes her dog got away, but says the amount of the fine doesn't match the offense. She says she will appear in court to argue against the size of the fine.
Police Chief Danny Howard says the fine is high because several other dogs also wandered off from the Sanford residence. Howard says those who go to court might have fines reduced based on the circumstances of their cases.
