Forum being held on using air guns off SC coast

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Opponents of the use of air guns for energy exploration off the East Coast are holding a forum in Charleston.

The discussion Wednesday night at the College of Charleston is sponsored by Oceana, an ocean conservation group, and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.

Air guns use loud blasts of compressed air shot though the water and into the ocean floor. The blasts reflect back information about what kind of oil and gas deposits may be underneath.

Opponents of the technique say the guns are so loud they disturb, injure and can kill marine life, including dolphins and whales.

Oceana is holding a series of forums on the air guns in states from New Jersey to Florida.
