Four Tigers ready to start play in Masters on Thursday

Clemson,SC Current Clemson golfer Corbin Mills and former Tiger All-Americans JonathanByrd, Lucas Glover and Kyle Stanley will all begin play in the 2012 Masters onThursday. {}{}With four former or current players in the field, Clemsontrails only Oklahoma State, who has five former players participating.

OklahomaState's five players are Rickie Fowler, Charles Howell, Hunter Mahan, Bo VanPelt and Scott Verplank. Arizona State and Georgia Tech rank tied for thirdwith three apiece, while Stanford, Wake Forest, Georgia, Arizona, Texas,Houston and UCLA all have two former or current players in the Masters field.

TheACC has the most former players among conferences with 12 followed by the Pac10 with 11, the Big 12 with 10 and the SEC with five.{} Six different ACC schools have at least onecurrent or former player in this year's Masters.

Mills, ajunior on the Clemson team this year, qualified for the Masters by winning the2011 United States Public Links Championship in Oregon. He also won the PlayersAmateur the next week and will play in the Heritage at Hilton Head thefollowing weekend.

This year,Mills is ranked 22nd in the nation among college players according to theSagarin college rankings, best among current Tigers, and is 12th in the WorldAmateur rankings by Golfweek, fifth among United States players. (rankings asof March 25).{} {}He has a 71.10 stroke average for seven eventsand has 11 under-par rounds, first on the team. He won the Jerry PateIntercollegiate in the fall and is coming off a final round 65 at the FurmanInvitational where he finished third.

Mills is thefourth Clemson golfer to play in the Masters as an active college golfer. ChrisPatton is the only one of the previous three to make the cut. The Clemson Hallof Famer finished 39th with a 296 score at the 1990 Masters the April after hewon the United States Amateur. D.J. Trahan did not make the cut at the 2001Masters after winning the 2000 United States Public Links the summer before.Ben Martin did not make the cut at the 2010 Masters after finishing second atthe 2009 US Amateur.

Byrdqualified for the Masters by finishing in the top 30 on the PGA Tour money listlasts year. He will be playing in his fifth Masters. {}A Clemson Ring ofhonor inductee this past fall, Byrd finished eighth at the 2003 Masters with a288 score, the best finish by a former Clemson golfer at the Masters.{}{}Byrdhas won five career PGA Tour events, more than any other former Tiger.

Gloverqualified for this Masters by winning the 2009 US Open. He is in the third yearof a five-year exemption into the Master from that US Open victory. He has madethe cut in two of his four previous Masters appearances, including a 20th placefinish in 2007.

Gloverhas been Clemson's best player in Majors overall. His victory at the US Open in2009 is the only Major win by a former Tiger, his 12th place finish at theBritish Open last July is the best finish by a former Tiger in that event, andhis fifth-place finish at the 2009 PGA is the best by a former Tiger at thatmajor. His 20th place in the Masters is in 2007 is the third best. He is the onlyformer Clemson golfer to make the cut in all four Majors.

Stanleyqualified for the Masters by winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open inFebruary. He is ranked fifth in the FedEx Cup standings and fifth on themoney list with nearly $2 million entering the Masters.{} He{} hasmade seven of nine cuts this year and is 12th in greens inregulation, sixth in driving distance.{}Stanley, an All-American at Clemson from 2006-08, will be playing in hisfirst Masters, but he has played in three Majors, including the 2011 BritishOpen when he finished 44th.

Mills andStanley are two of the top eight youngest players in the field. Mills, who wasborn on April 30, 1990, is one of four players 21 or younger. The others arePatrick Cantley, Ryo Ishikawa and Bryden MacPherson. {}Stanley, who wasborn November 19, 1987, is just 24 and the eighth youngest player in the field.All four of Clemson's players in the field are 34 or younger.
