Charleston Animal Society offers free adoptions

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston Animal Society is back at max capacity yet again, and the agency is offering another special to get animals into new homes.

The animal society is offering free animals Wednesday June 26 through Sunday June 30.

"Traditionally, we see a great leap in the number of kittens coming into our system during the summer months, but never before has our situation been so urgent," explains Joe Elmore, Chief Executive Officer of Charleston Animal Society.{}"We don't turn animals away nor do we import highly desirable animals from other areas at the expense of local animals."

All animals that leave the animal society are spayed, neutered, have a microchip and are up-to-date on all of their shots.

To get a jumpstart on the campaign, PetSmart gift cards will be given to the first 50 adopters on Wednesday.

"Last June, we had in excess of 600 animals in our system, which was our all-time record," said Elmore. "Right now, we have already exceeded that number by more than 200 animals.{} These totals have been driven up by the exceptional number of kittens brought to us, and we are committed to making sure they all find good homes."

The Charleston Animal Society is located at 2455 Remount Rd. in North Charleston.

The shelter is holding extended adoption hours for the event. They're open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Dogs from Charleston Animal Society are also available on weekends at PetSmart stores at 2076 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., West Ashley and 676 Long Point Rd. in Mount Pleasant.{} Adoption hours for these locations are Friday from Noon until 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m.{}

There are also cats available every day at PetCo, located at 975 Savannah Hwy., West Ashley.{} Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
