      Gaillard gets green light for renovation

      CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston City Council unanimously approved the Gaillard renovation project Tuesday night.Mayor Joe Riley told ABC News 4 on Wednesday that the entire building has been stripped and is ready for construction.

      The Charleston Board of Architectural Review approved the final design last month.Renovations include an updated auditorium, where 900 seats will be lost to create better acoustics. Also in the works, an ornate atrium and a new banquet hall fit for weddings and large meeting events. We're told work will begin in August and should be finished by the end of 2014. The mayor says the new auditorium will reopen for events by January or February of 2015.The renovated Gaillard will also include new consolidated City of Charleston offices. The project will cost about $142 million.
