Georgetown County patrol vehicle stolen by mental patient

      GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- A mental patient appears to have driven away with a Georgetown County Sheriff's Office patrol car after deputies tried to serve commitment papers.

      According to the sheriff's office, the patient walked away from the Waccamaw Community Hospital Sunday morning and was seen walking down Highway 17 Bypass near Murrells Inlet.{}

      Deputies say they tried to take the man into custody, but he ran away, evaded capture, circled back and got into one of the patrol cars and drove away. Deputies identified the man as 35-year-old Camilo Quiroga Diaz.

      Deputies pursued the patient to Tabor City, N.C., where the patient was stopped by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

      Now officials in Georgetown County are reviewing their procedures to determine what happened and how it can be prevented in the future.{}

      Diaz is being held at the Georgetown County Detention Center. He was been charged with grand larceny and failure to stop for blue lights.
