Georgetown deputies kill woman with mental issues, SLED investigates

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Georgetown County in which an allegedly mentally unstable woman was shot and killed.

The Georgetown County Coroner's Office on Monday identified the woman as 36-year-old Valerie Harrington of Pawleys Island.

According to Georgetown deputies, officers were sent to an Ashcraft Circle home in the Litchfield Beach community for a welfare check.

The welfare check was requested by Harrington's family and legal representative after they learned she had barricaded herself in a bathroom with a knife and threatened to harm herself, deputies said.

Deputies had property managers let them into the home, at which point Harrington allegedly charged at the deputies with the knife.

One of the deputies opened fire and killed Harrington.

Because an officer was involved, SLED was called in to investigate the shooting and the officer was placed on administrative leave. Officials did not release the name of the deputy.

The sheriff's office has deferred all comment on the matter to SLED.
