Georgetown hospital named 'baby friendly'

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- Waccamaw Community Hospital is the first hospital in the state to earn the Baby-Friendly hospital designation.The award recognizes birth facilities that offer mothers the information and skills needed to breastfeed their babies, based on UNISEF's 'Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.'At Waccamaw, the staff is trained to counsel and care for mothers and their babies. The staff also promotes bonding by placing newborns on their mothers' skin immediately after birth, and allowing healthy mothers and babies to stay together day and night.There are 160 hospitals in the United States that are recognized as "baby friendly" and 20,000 around the world. The award is given after an extensive on-site survey examining the hospital's policies, practices and procedures.
