Georgetown Co. woman charged with murder of husband
HEMINGWAY, S.C. (WCIV) - A Georgetown County woman was arrested Friday night and charged with the murder of her husband.
Investigators say 58-year-old Sonia Gay Smith shot and killed her 60-year-old husband, Fermiond Smith, at their Ray Road home in Hemingway.
According to deputies, officers were sent to the home around 9:30 p.m. Friday after a 911 caller said she had shot her husband.
When deputies arrived, they found the man lying on the floor in the home and took Smith into custody. Sonia Smith was found sitting on the kitchen floor about two feet away from her husband's body and the weapon sitting on the kitchen counter.
Deputies said the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between the couple.
An incident report released Monday shows Smith had been shot in the head. His elderly mother was in the house at the time of the shooting.
A neighbor said the Smiths were always fighting.
"They was drunk all the time and they was like always fighting," said next-door neighbor Brooke Cecile.
Neighbors said the couple, originally from Georgia, had only lived on Ray Road for a few years.
Smith was charged with murder and taken to the Georgetown County Detention Center. At the jail, officers tried to give her a Breathalyzer test due to the reportedly strong smell of alcohol on her breath, but she declined, officials said.
