Goose Creek man wins $200K, buys wife a car

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) -- A family tradition turned into cash over the weekend.

Sunday, Goose Creek resident Theodore Watson stopped by a Rivers Avenue gas station and purchased a scratch-off lottery ticket that ended up being worth $200,000.

Watson told lottery officials it's a purchase he makes every Sunday.

"I've played scratch tickets since I was 18," he said.{} "It comes from my mom, who growing up would buy them at the gas station. I watched her scratch them for fun and that's why I do it."

Watson was returning a rental car, since his own was acting up. He used his winnings to buy his wife a new car.

"For 18 years my wife has tolerated me buying used cars," he said. He said he'll also put the winnings towards his son's college tuition.

Watson claimed the first top prize of $200,000 in the $10 Cool Turquoise 7s game.{} Officials say the odds of winning the top prize were 1 in 576,000.

For selling the claimed ticket, Murphy Express in North Charleston received a commission of $2,000.
