COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley has vetoed $18.5 million from the Legislature's $7 billion spending plan for the coming year.
Haley announced her 76 vetoes Thursday.
They include $2 million from the lieutenant governor's Office on Aging for services to help seniors live independently rather than being placed in more expensive nursing homes.
Haley's says she appreciates that the funding increase is largely tied to the federal government's declining support for the program. But she says the bottom line is that state spending on the program is rising too rapidly. Haley says the program received an additional $3 million in another section of the budget.
She also vetoed $100,000 for a state Hall of Fame, $250,000 for the Woodrow Wilson family home, and $150,000 for the Greenville Children's Museum.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
