Haley: Being bullied taught her to speak up

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley says being bullied as a child taught her to speak up and be strong.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the governor made the comments to school children Thursday as part of her anti-bullying campaign.

Haley is Indian-American and says she was bullied in elementary school because children didn't know if she was black or white.

Haley says she told her parents about being bullied. Her parents told her teachers and the teachers helped educate the class about bullying.

Haley says she is good friends now with those who bullied her.
