COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley says South Carolina officials learned from last week's winter storm and are meeting to discuss what could be done differently, adding that she's very proud of the state's response.
Haley's Democratic opponent, Sen. Vincent Sheheen, has criticized her for not going to Charleston as the Ravenel Bridge iced up. It closed for more than 40 hours, then closed again after sheets of ice fell from the bridge.
Haley dismissed the jab, saying officials learned salt doesn't work on that particular bridge, and did what was needed to keep people safe.
She also says her reported comment on Georgia's handling was never meant to be a slight to Gov. Nathan Deal. She says she was angry as a sister because her brother was stuck in the Atlanta traffic.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
