Hilton Head Council opposes college location

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Hilton Head Island Town Council does not like the idea of a college campus near the beach.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports a crowd turned out Tuesday to hear proposals for redeveloping the Coligny Circle area. One of them would be for a University of South Carolina-Beaufort building for hospitality classes.

The council did not vote, but most members opposed the idea.

Town Manager Steve Riley and Mayor Drew Laughlin suggested the town move ahead with plans to create more beach parking. Riley said that for 15 years the town has asked if something can be done with the area beyond a park and parking lot and people are saying no.

He said the town should work with USC-Beaufort to find another location for the campus.
