SOCASTEE, S.C. (AP) - A swing bridge on South Carolina's Grand Strand has been closed after a hole developed on the roadway at one end of the span.
The Socastee swing bridge crosses the Intracoastal Waterway and the bridge operator says the hole is 2 feet wide and several feet deep. The hole was reported late Tuesday afternoon.
The bridge will be closed to traffic indefinitely. The state Transportation Department is assessing the damage Wednesday.
The bridge is heavily traveled, although there are other fixed-span crossings of the waterway in the area.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
