SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - A homeless couple in Sumter says a man came up to them in a park and shot and killed their dog without any warning, then ran away laughing.
Sumter police are investigating the incident, and told The Sumter Item (http://bit.ly/1jZddWO ) that the man drove to the police station after the shooting to report it.
Investigators say the man told them he shot the dog in self-defense after it growled and charged him at Memorial Park on Thursday morning.
Brady and Nina Lambert say they didn't know the shooter. His name was not released.
The couple says their two dogs helped them deal with the stress of Nina Lambert losing her job and being evicted from their home in April.
