MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- As we have already seen this hurricane season, tropical weather can spark serious and long-term flooding, power outages and more.
When Mother Nature lashes out, families need to be prepared. East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) works to help families with that preparation.
"You have to plan to be on your own," said Ivan Lund with ECCO. "That's your responsibility to take care of your family."
ECCO formed after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. One of its many missions is to educate about disaster and hurricane awareness. On Lowcountry Live, Lund touted the benefits of having a "Family Disaster Plan" and a "Family Disaster Kit."
"Five days worth of food and water. It should be dry foods," Lund said. "And have your medications for your family. And have your pet food, your pet medications"
Other items to include are: a flashlight, batteries, a weather radio and a whistle.
"The best thing you can do is stay informed," Lund said. "Make a plan and evacuate early."
