Inaugural Kiawah Island golf resort triathlon slated for Sept. 15

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (KIAWAH) -- The organizers of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon and Half Marathon Tuesay announced that the new Kiawah Island Golf Resort Triathlon will be contested on Kiawah Island on Sept. 15.

Tri-Kiawah will be a USAT sanctioned intermediate distance competition featuring a .7-mile swim, 24-mile bike and 6-mile run. This race is currently the only intermediate distance triathlon in the Charleston area to feature an ocean swim. Please note: bike and run courses are in the process of being finalized. Once complete, exact course measurements will be published.

The competition kicks off with the .7-mile point-to-point swim in the Atlantic Ocean in front of The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.{} Athletes will be swimming with the current. Ocean temperature is expected to hover near 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Next, contestants will embark on a 24-mile bike ride on a well-marked course that stretches the entire length of Kiawah Island.{} According to organizers, the course is flat and fast with athletes experiencing minimal sharp turns.{} Winds are expected to be moderate to light as athletes bike through Kiawah's maritime forest, with winds increasing in strength through the vast and open salt marsh habitat.

The race ends with a 6-mile run that loops through well-shaded neighborhoods and onto Kiawah's front beach. Participants can expect an elevation change of less than 18 feet throughout the entire course. Transitioning from pavement and boardwalks to wide beach with hard packed sand provides an unequaled racing experience.

The transition area will be located in Night Heron Park, a 21-acre spectator and family-friendly park in the heart of Kiawah Island. Organizers explained that the Kiawah Island Golf Resort Triathlon will be geared for both the beginner triathlete as well as the seasoned competitors in a unique environment that showcases Kiawah's diverse natural habitats and unparalleled beauty.
