COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina inmate is facing new charges in connection with holding a guard hostage at a maximum security prison last year.
The State Law Enforcement Division said Thursday 24-year-old Brian Rashard Garris had been charged with first-degree assault, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and participating in a prison riot.
Authorities say Garris started a June 2012 riot at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville. Police say Garris hit an officer in the head, then used his keys to open other inmates' cells. After a six-hour standoff, police blew open a door and regained control.
Garris has been moved to another maximum security prison, where he is serving a 40-year armed robbery sentence. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney on the new charges.
