WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) - Jeffery Bogart says Tuesday was like any other night until his girlfriend was shot and killed in their front yard by a drive-by shooter.
"I hear pow-pow-pow, about 20 shots," said Bogart.
Bogart says he was finishing up some gardening when 34-year old Rebecca Marshelle Dewitt pulled up with her daughter and two friends.
"The window was down and she was turned around talking to her oldest daughter," Bogart said.
That's when Bogart says Dewitt, affectionately known as Becky, was shot in the back of her right shoulder. Bogart says doctors told him the bullet hit an artery that caused internal bleeding.
"I went up and when the window was down, I picked her head up to see where she was hit at and if she had a pulse," said Bogart.
"She said, 'Oh God it hurts' and her head went back and her mouth opened and all I seen was her fall forward," said Andrea Quintana, a friend who was sitting in the driver's seat at the time of the shooting.
Quintana says Dewitt's oldest daughter held her mother all the way to the hospital. Bogart says Becky died before they arrived.
Quintana says Dewitt was a loving friend and a mom to all the kids in the neighborhood.
"She'd go around the neighborhood 6:45 every morning, Monday thru Friday, and pick all the kids up and go take them to the bus stop," Quintana said.
Dewitt's death leaves three kids without a mother and a community mourning and angry.
"They deserve to rot in hell for the rest of their life," said Quintana.
The Colleton County Sheriff's Office is investigating this case. The solicitor says all people involved will be charged.
