      Jalena Jankovic advances in Family Circle Cup play

      CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Jalena Jankovic{}has advanced at the Family Circle Cup, dominating in straight sets to defeat American Lauren Davis 6-0, 6-3.

      Jankovic lost to Serena Williams in the 2013 Family Circle Cup finals.

      Jankovic was the prime time match of the night, playing under the lights on stadium court. She made quick work of the younger and smaller Davis.

      In the second set, Jankovic fell behind 2-0, but rallied after a series of long volleys broke her way. At one break after she had regained the lead, Davis could be seen panting and asked for her coach.

      Jankovic said after the match that she though Davis played well, especially at the start of the second set.{}

      "It was a tough match and Lauren started to play better in the second set. I'm glad I got through," Jankovic said.

      Earlier in the day, Venus Williams advanced at the Family Circle Cup, battling from behind to defeat Chanelle Scheepers 7-5, 7-5.

      It was another long day Wednesday for Williams, ranked No. 28 in the world and who needed an hour and 50 minutes to finish the straight-set victory over the South African. Williams fell behind 3-1 in the first set and trailed 4-1 in the second.

      The seven-time Grand Slam champion has battled injuries and Sjogren's syndrome, a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease, during the past two years. She was on the green clay in Charleston for two hours and 15 minutes on Tuesday in a three-set victory.

      Williams is the only remaining American player left in the singles draw.

      In the first match of the day on center court, American Sloane Stephens was upset 6-4, 6-4 by Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine, who got her fourth career victory over a top 20 player.
