Memorial service set for John Graham Altman

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Former state representative and school board chairman John Graham Altman died at the age of 79 after battling illness.

Altman served in political office for nearly 50 years.

"John Graham Altman will be remembered as a staunch conservative who fought hard for the things he believed in. {}Sometimes he drew heavy criticism from the left, {}but he never waivered from his strong {}principles. {}He was a gifted speaker with heart of gold. He will be missed by many who called him friend and colleague," said Chip Limehouse Tuesday afternoon.

"John Graham Altman was a true conservative.{} You always knew where you stood with him, he never hesitated to say exactly what was on his mind.{} John was a dear friend of mine and we are all going to miss him," said House Speaker Bobby Harrell.

Altman's visitation will be Friday, Nov. 8 from 5-8 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church on Savannah Highway.{} The memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at John Wesley at 10:30 a.m.
