CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The countdown is on for the Cooper River Bridge Run next Saturday as tens of thousands of people participate in the 10k race, but lots of families are looking forward to the day before the race.

It's a chance for kids to have fun while being active. Charelston Mayor Joe Riley is proclaiming it as Fitness is Fun Day.

"It's all part of the Cooper River Bridge Run and Kids Run and WonderFest has joined together so it's all part of promoting fun, fitness and hope and it's going to be a blast," said Christine Osborne, founder of WonderFest.

This is the first year that the Kids Run and Wonderfest will be combined together at Hampton Park. It will be an all day event focused on children and family.

"At the park when you go there, you are going to be encountered with just a wide array of fun and excitement," said Osborne. "There is going to be mechanical bulls for children, there are going to be obstacle courses; there are going to be like 20 other activities."

And at 5 p.m., the kids run will begin, serving as the unofficial kickoff to the bridge run.

"We are encouraging families to run with their children," said Osborne. "It's $8 for the child. They end up getting a medal, a coloring book and a wonderful kids run T-shirt. It's $12{}for the adults. If you don't have the moolah, don't worry about it. Jump in and run anyways."

Numerous schools will have teams running and there is even a prize.

"We have a huge trophy this year that is named the Dave Spurlock trophy and for the first time we are going to hand it out to the school that has the most spirit," said Osborne.

And of course, it's all in the spirit of fitness and fun.{}

The event is next Friday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is free to the public.

Osborne says she is expecting between 7,000 and 10,000 people to attend the Kids Run and Wonderfest.
