NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Some of the leaders in the healthcare industry are spending time in the Lowcountry this week to share thoughts and ideas on Medicare. Governor Nikki Haley delivered the Medicaid Enterprise Systems Conference opening address at the North Charleston Convention Center Monday morning. The conference brings together leaders from the public and private sectors to share ideas and information related to medicaid systems and initiatives in the state.Governor Haley has been very open about how she stands on the issue of Medicaid, saying she refuses to expand Medicaid under the new Affordable Care Act that was passed by Congress and signed by President Obama in 2010.House and Senate Republican leaders generally oppose the idea. But it's not guaranteed that lawmakers will reject it.Major provisions of the Affordable Care Act start on October 1.The conference will address the topics of the next generation of Medicaid technology, expansion, research and health outcomes.
Networking events will include a carriage ride tour and harbor cruise on Tuesday.
