CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Former Lenoir-Rhyne coach Mike Houston has been named to lead the Citadel's football program.
Citadel athletic director Larry Leckonby announced the hiring Thursday. Houston takes over from Kevin Higgins, the nine-year coach who left last month to become assistant head coach at Wake Forest.
Houston had led Lenoir-Rhyne to South Atlantic Conference titles in each of his three years as coach. The Bears advanced to the NCAA Division II championship game before losing to Northwest Missouri 43-28 last month.
Houston has gone 29-8 his three seasons with the Division II program. Houston was also an assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne and at Brevard College.
Houston will look to rebuild the Bulldogs, who fell to 5-7 this season after winning seven games the year before. Citadel competes in the Southern Conference.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
