CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Former Lenoir-Rhyne coach Mike Houston has been named to lead the Citadel's football program.

Citadel athletic director Larry Leckonby announced the hiring Thursday. Houston takes over from Kevin Higgins, the nine-year coach who left last month to become assistant head coach at Wake Forest.

Houston had led Lenoir-Rhyne to South Atlantic Conference titles in each of his three years as coach. The Bears advanced to the NCAA Division II championship game before losing to Northwest Missouri 43-28 last month.

Houston has gone 29-8 his three seasons with the Division II program. Houston was also an assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne and at Brevard College.

Houston will look to rebuild the Bulldogs, who fell to 5-7 this season after winning seven games the year before. Citadel competes in the Southern Conference.
