Less pain at the pump heading into holiday weekend

MOUNT PLEASANT, S. C. (WCIV)- Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, drivers in South Carolina can pocket the savings that they'll get at the pump.

AAA Carolinas announced Monday that the state has the lowest gas prices in the nation.

In fact, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas dropped eight cents from a week ago. The average price now stands at $3.35 per gallon.

Traditionally, gas prices{}spike around holidays. Economists say that the price is expected to remain the same even as the long weekend approaches.

Fluctuating gas prices can be attributed to several key factors: the Chinese economy, strength of the euro and the threat of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.

Living on the coast has its advantages when it comes to getting away for a holiday. "Living in Charleston you have the luxury of not really having to go far to the beach," says Stephen Wyatt.

And as far as having some of the lowest gas prices in the nation,"It definitely helps. Because you think about it every time you take a trip or go in to work somewhere over the bridge."

If you will be traveling across the state expect to pay around $3.30 a gallon in Columbia, an{}average of $3.31 in the upstate and right around $3.33 a gallon in Myrtle Beach.

AAA Carolinas will survey prices again Tuesday.
