ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV/AP) -- Lifeguards from across South Carolina are scheduled to show off their skills in a series of events.
The 16th annual South Carolina Recreation and Park Association's lifeguard competition is set for Friday on the beach on the Isle of Palms and at a pool in nearby Mount Pleasant.
At the beach, the teams comprised of four lifeguards compete in ocean swims, a mile run and rescue events. Events on the Isle of Palms begins at 10 a.m.
At the pool, events include competitions in lifesaving techniques such as managing spinal injuries and assessing injuries to swimmers. There are also 50-yard sprints and submerged water rescue competitions.
Organizers say the competition helps lifeguards work as a team and to think quickly in life-threatening situations.
