Linda Page sworn in as Mount Pleasant mayor

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Linda Page was sworn in as Mount Pleasant's mayor during a town council meeting Tuesday evening.

For Page, serving her community is nothing new but in her new role, she hopes to accomplish even more.

"I'm a big giver, and I look forward to being able to give back more. It's a great opportunity, and I'm happy the voters put me here," she said.

Page is the second female mayor to be elected in the town. Billy Swails, the town's former mayor, decided not to run for another term.

Page was all smiles and cheers as she took her oath of office.

"I'm excited to get to work," she said. "I've already had a lot of meetings the last couple of days. We ran the campaign. Now we're ready to be mayor and step up and do the job."

One of the first items on Page's agenda is to promote economic growth.

"We have to be a quality town to attract quality businesses. We will continue to have larger retail developers that will want to come here. We have space at Carolina Park," she said. "I'm more interested in, you know, we get Francis Marion over here and maybe some Boeing companies. There are a lot of companies that are not big box that offers higher salaries that we really want to court over here."

As Mount Pleasant continues to grow, so does the need for more schools and a closer working relationship with the Charleston County School District.

"We've already had conversations; they're supportive of getting our new schools built. We obviously need a school at Carolina Park to alleviate the overcrowding in the north end of town. We need a second high school," said Page.

As a small business owner who grew up in Mount Pleasant, Page said she vows to always put the town's people first.

"I'd like to come up with something where we can have 'Morning With the Mayor' or 'Meetings With the Mayor,'" she said.

After Page was sworn in Tuesday, she then swore in some of the town's newly elected council members.{}
