Local family's project to curb hot car deaths

COTTAGEVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Colleton County family is trying to raise money for a tool to help prevent children from being left in hot cars.

The Forget-Me-Not baby reminder band system for vehicles uses elastic bands hooked from an infant or toddler's seat to the driver.

"I was actually able to have it buckled to, or attached to my son's car seat, get out of my vehicle, and it tugged enough so that I knew it was there. And of course, I turn around and see what was going on," said Heather Bowen, the project's co-creator.

The project needs to raise $2,500 by Aug. 14 to receive funding. The Bowens hope to launch the product by October.

The Bowen family says their son's love of crafting inspired the idea.
