Lowcountry allergy season has sprung
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) The official start of spring may be more than a week away, but allergy season is already creating problems for some people.
You don't have to look hard to find allergy triggers throughout Charleston. Right now tree pollen is high and it is doing more than creating a yellow mess on cars.
"Pollen is very benign but if you are allergic to it can be very problem causing," said Dr. Thomas Murphy with Allergy & Asthma.
Common symptoms of allergies are sneezing, a tickle in the throat and watery eyes. Dr. Murphy says there are simple steps everyone can take to prevent a flare up.
"The real key is to identify what you are allergic to, so identifying and meeting a professional like an allergist who specializes in that," he said.
Doctor Murphy recommends limiting your outdoor exposure in the early morning hours when pollen is at its highest. As to treating, Murphy says there are options.
"The over the counter remedies are good for itching and sneezing but do little for consistent treatment for the runny, drip down the back and congestion. Medical treatment in the prescription form is important," he said.
