Lowcountry man convicted in double slaying
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A Lowcountry man has been convicted of two counts of murder in the 2009 shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend and her 4-year-old son.
A Beaufort County jury deliberated about three hours Thursday before returning the verdict against 31-year-old Ernest Stewart Daise of Burton.
The jury will begin hearing arguments in the sentencing phase of the trial Monday. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Daise was convicted in the deaths of 34-year-old Jeanine Mullen and her 4-year-old son, Waltfredo Davis-Mullen, in the community of Dale. He also was convicted of assault and battery with intent to kill his then-2-year-old son as well as two drug counts.
It is the first death penalty trial in Beaufort County in five years.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
