NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Businesses in the shopping center at 4400 Dorchester Road had a rude awakening Monday morning. Police cars surrounded Port City Liquors as they investigated a suspicious death.
Just before 8 o'clock Monday morning, North Charleston Police responded to a body being found in the office area of the store.
The coroner's office has identified the victim as 39-year-old Matthew Renkin. The coroner says Renkin died of a single gunshot wound.
Police have not confirmed it but people who work in the shopping center say Renkin was the owner of the store.
"He had just told me last week, just a few days ago that he would only come in here on Sundays just to get some work done, so that he wasn't bothered by other customers and things like that," said a woman who works a few doors down from Port City Liquors. She did not want to release her name.
When asked what kind of man the owner of the store was, the woman responded, "Very nice guy. Always wanting to know how you're doing, anything he can do to help and appreciates all of us watching out for each other."
Whomever the victim was, those who work near Port City Liquor say the death is a tragic loss.
"This is one of the nicest guys that you could ever meet. We're going to miss him."
Police are still investigating a cause of death.
