Police: Man hit by car, sent over bridge railing into water

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man jumped off the North Bridge Monday afternoon to avoid being hit by another car, according to witnesses.

However, police say the man later told them the car hit him and sent him over the bridge railing into the water below.

According to police, the man ran out of gas on the bridge and was standing behind his car shortly before the incident. The man is reportedly fine but was taken to Medical University Hospital as a precaution.{}

Northbound lanes on the bridge were closed briefly for emergency vehicles, but had been reopened by 4:45 p.m.
